The person behind toonjam

Hi, I'm Jamie.

Cartoonist, illustrator and the person you'll be working with.

I create illustrations for children’s books, brands, games and visitor attractions. If you have something in mind, I’d love to hear about it.

A little about me.

I’m Jamie Sale, a freelance cartoonist and illustrator based in Essex, UK, working with clients in the US, UK and beyond. I took on my first paid commission in 2006 and have been drawing professionally ever since. These days, that can mean developing characters for a children’s book, designing a mascot or filling an illustrated map with places to explore. Toonjam is the name behind my illustration work. When you get in touch, it’s me you’ll speak to-and me who’ll be illustrating your project. Away from the drawing desk, I’m a dad of three not-so-little-anymore ones. So there’s usually plenty going on.

Good artwork. A good experience, too.

The finished illustrations matter, of course. But then so does everything else that happens along the journey.
I strongly believe you should feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and telling me honestly when something isn’t quite how you want it.
It’s my job to understand what you’re trying to achieve. So, contributing ideas and keeping you fully involved while the artwork develops is essential for me.

You'll work directly with me

From the first enquiry to the final files, you’ll speak to the person creating your artwork… Me! We can talk through what’s working, what needs tweaking and what the next stages would be.

There's always room to explore

You don’t need to know exactly what you want fully upfront. We’ll use the brief and initial sketches to explore the various possibilities and we’ll agree a direction before moving into finished artwork.

You'll work directly with me

We’ll agree the overall scope of work, the costs, payment terms, usage and turnarounds before any work begins.  I’ll keep you fully updated and explain what I need from you at each stage of the process.

From first strokes to final renders

From the drawing desk.

Every character starts somewhere. Here’s the process of how I develop simple pose into a finished character illustration.
Always starting with rough shapes, then into to final colour and shading.

I draw digitally using a Wacom Cintiq Pro 24. With this hefty device, I can draw directly onto the screen. With each stage of the process, we can review the artwork together and agree on revisions… so you can help shape the result as it develops.

KIND WORDS FROM CLIENTS

“

We’ve commissioned 40-50 pieces of artwork through him, and he has been consistently great. As a bonus, Jamie’s also an excellent communicator, makes the effort to properly understand the needs of each project, and is just generally a really nice bloke.
